As a Great Tythe Barn wedding photographer, I love that everything can happen in one place. You can get ready at the venue, celebrate your ceremony and reception there, and stay overnight in the on-site accommodation with your closes friends and family. There’s no need to worry about travelling between different locations, which makes for a wonderfully relaxed wedding day and means I can tell the whole story from those first moments of getting ready through to the dancing in the evening.

The venue itself has so much character, with the beautiful historic barn surrounded by Cotswold countryside. There are plenty of opportunities for natural, relaxed photographs throughout the day, without needing to spend hours away from your guests.

My approach is very documentary and unobtrusive. I’ll photograph the moments as they happen; the nervous excitement while you’re getting ready, the emotion of the ceremony, hugs with family and friends , and dance floor antics. Alongside all of those candid moments, I’ll make sure we find time for some beautiful ‘frame worthy’ photographs of just the two of you.

Why I love Working at The Great Tythe Barn

I love photographing weddings at Great Tythe Barn because it is truly a beautiful venue with such a relaxed feel. Everything happens in one place, which means the day naturally flows from getting ready in the morning through to the ceremony, drinks, dinner and dancing in the evening.

The barn itself has plenty of character, while the gardens and surrounding countryside give us lots of opportunities for natural portraits and photographs of you with your guests. I particularly love photographing couples exploring the grounds together, finding pockets of beautiful light and capturing those quieter moments in between everything else that is happening.

Most of all, Great Tythe Barn suits the way I photograph weddings. I can move around quietly, photograph things as they unfold and tell the story of the whole day, from the excitement of the morning to the hugs, laughter, dancing and everything in between.

WHERE IS THE GREAT TYTHE BARN

The Great Tythe Barn is located just outside Tetbury in Gloucestershire, on the edge of the Cotswolds. Its countryside setting gives the venue a lovely sense of being away from everything, while still being within easy reach of Tetbury and the surrounding Cotswold towns and villages. The venue is well placed for guests travelling from further afield, with Cirencester, Stroud and Cheltenham all within easy driving distance, and Bristol, Bath and Oxford also accessible .

Getting ready at The Great Tythe Barn

The morning is often one of my favourite parts of a wedding to photograph. There’s the excitement building as everyone gets ready, the finishing touches to hair and make-up, dresses and suits being put on, and all those little conversations and moments happening around you.

Because the accommodation and wedding spaces are all together, there is plenty for me to photograph without interrupting what’s going on. I’ll capture the details as well as the people , your dress, flowers and shoes, alongside the much more important moments: friends helping each other get ready, parents popping in, champagne being opened and the anticipation before the ceremony.

The Great Tythe Barn Wedding Ceremony

INDOOR CEREMONY AT THE GREAT TYTHE BARN

An indoor ceremony at Great Tythe Barn has all the atmosphere you would expect from a beautiful Cotswold barn. The exposed beams, stone walls and natural character of the building create a wonderful setting for the ceremony, whatever the weather is doing outside.
From a photography point of view, there is lots happening around the ceremony itself. I particularly love photographing the people watching. A parent wiping away a tear, friends laughing at something unexpected, a nervous smile between the two of you – these are often the photographs that bring the ceremony back to life when you look through your images afterwards.

Once you’re officially married, there’s no need to go anywhere. You can simply walk out into the gardens and join your guests for drinks, photographs and the celebrations.

OUTDOOR CEREMONY AT THE GREAT TYTHE BARN

If you’re hoping for an outdoor ceremony, The Great Tythe Barn has the option to get married outside in the beautiful gardens. It’s a lovely way to make the most of the countryside setting and brings a completely different feel to the ceremony.

The Oak Wedding Pavilion gives you a lovely outdoor ceremony option, with the gardens and countryside providing a beautiful backdrop. From a photography point of view, I love the way the ceremony opens up the surroundings and there are so many opportunities to photograph not just the two of you, but the reactions of your guests and the atmosphere of the whole setting.

Couple Portraits at The Great Tythe Barn


As a Great Tythe Barn wedding photographer, capturing couple portraits at The Barn is an absolute dream. One of the things I love is that we don’t need to disappear off somewhere for your couple portraits as there are plenty of opportunities around the gardens and grounds. A brief, relaxed 20-minute stroll around the grounds during your drinks reception is all it takes to capture a gorgeous variety of portraits.

I keep portraits relaxed and natural. We’ll walk, talk, stop when I see good light and give you a little direction when you need it, rather than putting you into a series of awkward poses. If the light is looking particularly good later in the day, we can always sneak away again for a few minutes at golden hour.

Reception and Evening celebrations at The Great Tythe Barn

Once the ceremony is over, everything carries on in the same relaxed setting. Guests can enjoy drinks in the gardens while you spend time together, before everyone comes back together for the wedding breakfast in the barn.

This part of the day is full of opportunities for natural, candid photographs. I love photographing the conversations, hugs, children running around, friends catching up and all the little interactions happening between your guests.

Inside the barn, there’s plenty to photograph during the meal too , from the details you’ve chosen for your tables to the reactions and conversations happening around them. I’ll capture the bigger moments, but also keep an eye on everything happening around the room.

Then comes the evening celebrations. Whether your first dance is beautifully choreographed or simply a quick dance before everyone joins you, I’ll be there to photograph it as it happens. Once the dance floor fills, I tend to stay right in amongst your guests, capturing the energy, ridiculous dancing, hugs, laughter and all the people who have come together to celebrate with you.

How to Choose Your Great Tythe Barn Wedding Photographer

Choosing your wedding photographer is about much more than liking someone’s Instagram feed. Your photographer will be with you for a large part of your wedding day, and they’ll be responsible for documenting moments that can’t be recreated. Choosing your wedding photographer is a very personal decision but these are three things I would recommend before booking.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS.

Wedding photography isn’t simply about taking beautiful photographs. It involves anticipating moments, working in difficult light, managing large groups of people, understanding how a wedding day flows and knowing when to step in and when to stay completely out of the way.

An experienced wedding photographer isn’t just someone who knows how to expose a photo; they are a calm anchor on a fast-moving day. I’ve photographed more than 300 weddings, so I’ve experienced pretty much every combination of weather, lighting, timings and unexpected moments that a wedding day can throw at you. That experience means I can concentrate on photographing what’s happening rather than working out what to do next.

VIEW A FULL WEDDING GALLERY

Instagram and TikTok are designed to show you the highlights. A handful of beautiful photographs or a 30-second reel can look impressive, but they don’t tell you what a photographer’s coverage of an entire wedding looks like.

Ask to see a complete wedding gallery. Are there photographs that tell the story of the whole day? Are the photographs consistent? Do they still look good when the light changes and the conditions aren’t perfect?

This is particularly important if you want natural, documentary-style photography. You want to know that your photographer can tell the story of your whole wedding, not just produce a handful of standout images.

CHAT TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Your photographer is going to be around you for a significant part of your wedding day, so personality matters.

You don’t need to become best friends with your photographer, but you should feel comfortable having them around. If you’re looking for natural, candid photographs, I think it’s particularly important that you feel relaxed with the person behind the camera.

I’d always recommend having a conversation before booking. Ask about their approach, how they work during the day, how much direction they give, what happens if the weather changes and, importantly, whether what they’re describing actually matches the photographs you love.

Yes, I have photographed MANY beautiful weddings at Great Tythe Barn and love working at this Cotswold venue. Knowing the venue means I understand how the day flows, where the best light can be found and the locations that work beautifully for natural, relaxed photographs.

The Great Tythe Barn has lots of beautiful options for photographs. I particularly love the long tree lined driveway, the field that overlooks the church and the gorgeous rustic pathway that frames my subjects beautifully. The light does dictate the best location for photographs, which means that every wedding will present different location opportunities due to the weather, time of day, time of year, etc.

I keep couple portraits relaxed and natural, usually taking around 20 minutes during the day, with the option to spend a little longer together at golden hour if the light is looking beautiful.

Yes. Family photographs are an important part of many weddings. I recommend keeping the list to around 8–10 groups so they’re quick, organised and don’t take you away from your guests for too long.

Absolutely. The Oak Wedding Pavilion is beautifully set up for photography. I discreetly capture your ceremony from multiple angles on the lawn without obstructing your guests’ views or distracting you from your vows.

My approach combines documentary wedding photography with beautiful, natural portraits. I focus on capturing the moments that happen naturally throughout the day, while also creating gorgeous portraits that you will love looking back on. The result is a gallery that tells the full story of your wedding while still including portraits you will want to frame.

Some of my favourite images have been taken in the rain. A walk together with a couple of umbrellas can create beautifully atmospheric, romantic photographs that feel completely different to those taken on a sunny day.
Having photographed more than 300 weddings, I can honestly say that I’ve never seen the rain dampen the spirits of a wedding. Couples still laugh, guests still celebrate and the day still feels just as special.

Not at all. 99% of my couples tell me they feel awkward about having their photographs taken before their wedding day. I believe that photos should reflect personalities, and the process of creating beautiful photographs should be a fun one. I stay away from ‘awkward static’ poses and I encourage you to move and interact with each other. Most couples are surprised by how easy and enjoyable it feels, and a few hours into the day they’ve forgotten the camera is even there.
