Upcote Barn Summer wedding

UPCOTE BARN SUMMER WEDDING

If you are planning an Upcote Barn Summer wedding and dreaming of something relaxed, emotional, and full of joy, Emma and Jamie’s day is a beautiful example of how effortlessly it can all come together.

The Barn at Upcote is a relaxed countryside venue in Gloucestershire, known for its rural countryside setting and gorgeous outdoor ceremony space. It also happens to have one of the longest walks into a ceremony I’ve come across, which always adds a sense of anticipation. Emma got ready at the venue, which instantly slows the morning down in the best way. No hopping between locations, no watching the clock, just time to settle in, spend the morning with the people closest to her, and ease into the day before everything starts to move a little faster.

The ceremony was held outdoors, surrounded by rolling countryside and that glorious blue Gloucestershire sky. Outdoor ceremonies at the Barn at Upcote always feel incredibly personal and relaxed and this one was no exception. The weather was absolutely perfect, not often the case in the UK, but when it delivers it really does make for such a beautiful day.

When it came to couple portraits, Emma and Jamie wanted nothing stiff or staged. We kept things simple and fun, wandering the property, chatting, laughing, and letting things unfold naturally. This is always my approach. I want couples to feel like themselves, not like they are performing for the camera. The result is images that feel easy and alive, full of movement and ‘connection’ rather than poses.

The speeches were deeply moving. They were emotional, funny, and incredibly sincere, with stories that had people laughing one minute and wiping their eyes the next. You could feel how loved and supported Emma and Jamie are, and from a documentary point of view, those moments are gold nuggets. The small reactions, the shared glances, hands reaching across tables, and arms pulling people in close, all completely unprompted and honest.

As the evening rolled in, the energy shifted in the best possible way. The first dance was epic. Jamie lifting Emma up as the music kicked in, the crowd cheering, and that pure joy spilling out onto the dancefloor. It was one of those moments where you could feel the room erupt. From that point on, the dancefloor never slowed down and everyone really was, having the best time.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that 95% of the day is spent capturing your wedding ‘reportage style’? Reportage wedding photography, also known as documentary or photojournalistic wedding photography, focuses on capturing candid and spontaneous moments throughout the wedding day. This style emphasizes storytelling, aiming to narrate the events as they unfold naturally, without intervention or posing. These natural, candid and emotive images make up the bulk of your wedding gallery and I think most modern contemporary wedding photographers shoot in this manner.
