A PHOTOGRAPHER’S GUIDE TO PLANNING YOUR LAPSTONE BARN WEDDING

As a Lapstone Barn wedding photographer, I appreciate just how beautifully this venue captures the timeless romance of the Cotswolds. Having photographed several weddings at Lapstone Barn, I know all the best pockets of light and the perfect locations to create gorgeous portraits that feel completely effortless

My approach combines documentary wedding photography with beautiful, natural portraits, giving you a gallery that feels authentic while still including those gorgeous images you’ll want to frame. I love capturing the moments that naturally unfold throughout the day, from the excitement of morning preparations and emotional ceremony moments to the laughter, conversations and celebrations that continue into the evening.

Set near Chipping Campden, 18th-century Lapstone Barn blends historic charm with contemporary style, offering rolling views and south-facing lawns

Why LAPSTONE Barn IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE VENUES.

Lapstone Barn is a very special Cotswold venue to photograph and I just love the barn’s neutral colour palette and natural stone. Lapstone Barn offers a modern rustic aesthetic with exceptional natural light for a seamless flow and my highlights include the fragrant courtyard garden, expansive lawns, and the grand Grade II listed Stone Barn. The attentive and organised venue team further ensures every wedding runs flawlessly.

And then there are the portraits. The countryside around Lapstone is gorgeous, so when we do take a few minutes away from everyone else, there are plenty of beautiful places to wander and photograph you together without it feeling staged.

HOW TO FIND LAPSTONE BARN

Perfectly situated on a peaceful, elevated ridge in the North Cotswolds, Lapstone Barn offers a highly desirable countryside setting that is remarkably straightforward to reach. Located just a five-minute drive outside the historic, picture-perfect market town of Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire, the venue is easily accessible via the A44 for guests travelling from Stratford-upon-Avon, Birmingham or Oxford.

As a local Lapstone Barn wedding photographer, I love that it sits just far enough off the beaten track to provide complete rural privacy while staying close to local luxury hotels and old English inns.

Morning Preparations at Lapstone Barn

As a Lapstone Barn wedding photographer, I always look forward to capturing the early morning energy here. The venue features the stunning, dedicated Hayloft bridal preparation area, complete with beautiful rustic rafters and soft, natural light, making it an absolute dream for those authentic, documentary-style prep shots as you get pampered

While the bridal party is getting ready in the comfort of the Hayloft, the groomsmen can prepare separately on-site in the beautifully converted Stables. Having both preparation spaces just a short walk apart allows me to seamlessly float between both parties.

Lapstone Barn Wedding Ceremony

Lapstone Barn gives you the choice of two incredibly romantic spots to say your vows, making it a spectacular backdrop in any season. Indoors, the grand 18th-century Stone Barn features soaring eaves, high timber beams, and exposed Cotswold stone. It holds up to 140 guests for an indoor ceremony, creating an intimate, candlelit atmosphere that photographs beautifully.

If you have your heart set on an outdoor ceremony, the south-facing English Courtyard accommodates up to 200 guests, offering a breath-taking, airy setting for your vows. Whichever space you choose, my approach remains entirely unobtrusive, allowing the genuine emotion of your ceremony to unfold naturally while I document the magic

Couple Portraits at Lapstone Barn

One of the things I love most as a Lapstone Barn wedding photographer is how effortlessly the venue lends itself to relaxed couple portraits. Lapstone Barn has some lovely spots for natural wedding photos and I’ll take you off for a little wander , usually for around 20 minutes, whilst we walk, talk and look for lovely light. We’ll make the most of the countryside around the barn, find some lovely light and give you a chance to have a breather together while I take some photographs.

The landscape around Lapstone is particularly lovely in the evening, so if we’re lucky with the light, we can also sneak out for a few golden hour photographs. It’s one of my favourite parts of the day – a few quiet minutes together before you head back to the party.

Lapstone Barn Golden Hour

There is something truly magical about golden hour at Lapstone Barn. Because the venue features completely open, south-facing lawns, the Cotswold landscape catches the setting sun perfectly. The entire stone structure and surrounding fields glow with a warm, amber light that photographers absolutely live for.

During the height of summer, we will keep an eye out for that perfect light between 8pm and 9pm, while cozy winter weddings bring a beautiful golden glow much earlier, around 3.30pm to 4pm. I always recommend building a quick 10-to-15-minute window into your evening timeline to step outside. Even if the British weather leaves us with clouds, sneaking away into the crisp evening air gives you a peaceful moment together to take it all in

Capturing the evening celebrations at Lapstone Barn

Once your guests are seated inside the beautiful Barn for the wedding breakfast, the atmosphere completely transforms. The speeches are always one of my absolute favourite parts of the day to capture.

As a documentary photographer, I focus entirely on capturing the unscripted reactions -the belly laughs, the happy tears, and the ‘wincing’ groom during the best man’s speech. Because of the spacious, airy layout of the dining barn, I can discreetly move around without disrupting the flow of the room, ensuring I capture candid expressions from your top table as well as the reactions of your closest family and friends.

Once the music kicks off, the stone walls and high rafters bounce the energy right back onto the dance floor. Whether you have hired a live band or a DJ, the layout keeps the bar and the dance floor close together, which is the secret to keeping your party packed all night long. My evening coverage captures all the high-energy moments, impromptu dance-offs, and late-night laughs completely naturally, giving you a vibrant record of how your epic day concluded.

My aim is always to capture the feeling of your wedding at Lapstone Barn, creating a gallery that brings you back to the atmosphere and emotions of the day.

How to Choose Your Lapstone Barn Wedding Photographer

Your photographer will be with you through every moment of your wedding day. Choosing your wedding photographer is a very personal decision, and finding someone whose approach matches what you value is just as important as loving their images.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS.

A photographer who has photographed weddings at Lapstone Barn will understand how the venue flows, where the best light can be found, how much time is needed for portraits and how to work seamlessly around the plans for your day. This knowledge allows you to relax, knowing your photographer can anticipate moments and make the most of the beautiful surroundings.

VIEW A FULL WEDDING GALLERY

When looking at photographers, I always recommend asking to see a full wedding gallery at Lapstone Barn, rather than only a selection of favourite images on Instagram. A wedding gallery should tell the complete story of the day – from morning preparations and the ceremony through to speeches, dancing and the moments in between. Look for a gallery that feels consistent, with a style and approach that you love from beginning to end.

CHAT TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Your photographer will be by your side for most of your wedding day, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with them as a person, not just their photography. A call before booking is a great way to get a feel for their personality, how they work and whether their approach feels right for you. The best photographs come when you feel relaxed and trust the person behind the camera.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lapstone Barn Weddings

Yes! I have photographed weddings at Lapstone Barn and absolutely adore the venue. Knowing how the space flows means I can quickly anticipate the best pockets of light and find the most flattering, natural backdrops for your portraits, no matter the weather.

Lapstone has so many beautiful options for photographs. The light does dictate the best location for photographs, which means that every wedding will present different location opportunities due to the weather, time of day, time of year, etc.

I love keeping portraits entirely relaxed, authentic, and fast. We will usually take about 20 minutes during the afternoon drinks reception, and then sneak out for another quick 10 minutes at golden hour if the light looks beautiful. You won’t be kept away from your guests or your champagne for long!

Yes. Family photographs are an important part of many weddings. I recommend keeping the list to around 8–10 groups so they’re quick, organised and don’t take you away from your guests for too long.

Yes, 100%! Lapstone Barn is completely dog-friendly, and they love welcoming your four-legged family members to join in on the celebrations, though you may want to hire a dog sitter for parts of the day.

No. Couples are free to choose the photographer who feels right for them. While venue recommendations can be helpful, the most important thing is finding someone whose photography style, approach and personality match what you are looking for.

My approach combines documentary wedding photography with beautiful, natural portraits. I focus on capturing the moments that happen naturally throughout the day, while also creating gorgeous portraits that you will love looking back on. The result is a gallery that tells the full story of your wedding while still including portraits you will want to frame.

Absolutely. Along with my documentary coverage, I work closely with you before the wedding day to structure a relaxed photography timeline, that still keeps us on track throughout the day.

Not at all. 99% of my couples tell me they feel awkward about having their photographs taken before their wedding day. I believe that photos should reflect personalities, and the process of creating beautiful photographs should be a fun one. I stay away from ‘awkward static’ poses and I encourage you to move and interact with each other. A lot of my photographs that you see on my web site, couples are actually walking and just engaging with each other. In fact, some of my favourite photos, couples are not even looking at the camera. Most couples are surprised by how easy and enjoyable it feels, and a few hours into the day they’ve forgotten the camera is even there.

Now. Today. Yesterday! Ha ha. Experienced sought after wedding photographers book up 12-24 months in advance, so once you have booked your venue , booking your photographer is the next priority.

TOP TIPS

01

The Hayloft bridal prep room is an absolute dream for documentary-style photography because of its massive windows and natural light. Try to keep the area closest to the main windows clear of bags, clothes, and hangers. Keeping this specific pocket tidy allows me to capture those clean, beautiful, unscripted moments, like buttoning your dress or your emotional dress reveal without any distracting background clutter.

02

Try and have speeches either before or after the meal, and not between courses. Having them between courses almost always makes the day run late as all the plates need to be cleared, and glasses refilled before each speech.
