Why I love photographing weddings at Kingscote Barn

Kingscote Barn is one of my favourite Cotswold venues to photograph because everything flows so naturally. From the morning preparations to the ceremony, drinks reception and evening celebrations, everything is just a short walk apart, creating a relaxed atmosphere where the day unfolds effortlessly.

The setting is beautiful too. With sheep grazing in the surrounding fields, sweeping views across the valley and a gorgeous lawn where guests can relax after the ceremony, there are endless opportunities for natural, storytelling photographs. Inside, the stunning ceremony barn, with its high vaulted ceiling, exposed beams and twinkling fairy lights, feels both light and romantic whatever the season.

The team at Kingscote Barn are another reason I always enjoy working here. They’re incredibly organised, professional and always one step ahead, helping every wedding run smoothly so couples can simply relax and enjoy every moment.

Morning Preparations at Kingscote Barn

As a Kingscote Barn wedding photographer, I always enjoy the start of the day here. The spacious bridal preparation room is filled with beautiful natural light, creating the perfect setting for relaxed, documentary photographs as the excitement builds. The large ornate silver mirror is a lovely feature too, adding an elegant backdrop for those final finishing touches.

Just a short walk away, the groomsmen have their own stylish pods to get ready in, making it easy to capture both sides of the morning without anyone feeling rushed. With everything so close together, the day flows seamlessly from preparations to the ceremony, allowing me to tell the full story from the very beginning.

The Wedding Ceremony at Kingscote Barn

Kingscote Barn offers a choice of two beautiful ceremony spaces. The indoor ceremony barn is full of character, with its high vaulted ceiling, exposed Cotswold stone, timber beams and twinkling fairy lights creating a warm, romantic setting that photographs beautifully in every season.

If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, Kingscote Barn offers a stunning space overlooking the rolling Gloucestershire countryside. With uninterrupted views across the valley, it’s a spectacular backdrop for saying “I do” and creates beautiful, natural photographs that really showcase the setting. Whether your ceremony takes place indoors or outside, my documentary approach allows me to capture the real moments and emotions as they unfold, without interrupting the experience.

Couple Portraits at Kingscote Barn

One of the things I love most as a Kingscote Barn wedding photographer is how naturally the venue lends itself to relaxed couple portraits due to it’s beautiful outdoor spaces. Kingscote Barn offers a wonderful variety of backdrops within just a few minutes’ walk. The rolling countryside and valley views create beautiful timeless portraits, while the lake at the bottom of the hill provides a stunning setting for more romantic images. The little rose garden is also a lovely spot for more intimate portraits with a softer feel. With so many beautiful locations close by, you can enjoy your portraits without being away from your guests for long.

Golden hour at Kingscote Barn

One of the real highlights of photographing weddings at Kingscote Barn is the incredible golden hour light. The views from the top of the hill are simply stunning, with the countryside stretching out in front of you as the sun drops behind the Cotswold landscape. When the conditions are right, it creates a beautiful opportunity for relaxed portraits with a backdrop that feels completely connected to the setting.

Golden hour is usually around 8–9pm in the height of summer and closer to 3.30–4pm in the winter months, although the exact timing changes throughout the year. If golden hour portraits are something you would love, it is worth considering this when planning your wedding timeline so there is time to step outside and enjoy the light. Of course, sunsets can never be guaranteed, but when everything comes together, it can be a pretty magical reward at the end of your wedding day.

Capturing the celebrations at Kingscote Barn

As the day moves into the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations, Kingscote Barn has such a wonderful atmosphere. The barn’s character, warm lighting and beautiful surroundings create the perfect setting for capturing all the moments that make your wedding personal.

From the anticipation and laughter during speeches to the reactions from your guests, the excitement of the first dance and the energy of the dance floor, I focus on telling the complete story of your day. Alongside the big moments, I also look for the small interactions that often become some of your favourite photographs – the hugs, the laughter and the moments you may not have seen happening.

My aim is always to capture the feeling of your wedding at Kingscote Barn, creating a gallery that brings you back to the atmosphere and emotions of the day.

KINGSCOTE BARN GOLDEN HOUR WEDDING

The clouds began to part, the sun broke through, and the entire Cotswold landscape was bathed in the most incredible golden light. It was one of those moments photographers dream about.

AN OUTDOOR CEREMONY AT KINGSCOTE BARN

Hannah and Dan’s relaxed family summer wedding at Kingscote Barn was everything I thought it would be and more. Is there anything nicer than an outdoor wedding ceremony in the Summer?

Chloe and Andrew had arranged to have an outdoor wedding ceremony complete with a handmade flower arch but due to the ‘great British weather’ they had to move their ceremony indoors.

How to Choose Your Kingscote Barn Wedding Photographer

Your photographer will be with you through every moment of your wedding day. Choosing your wedding photographer is a very personal decision, and finding someone whose approach matches what you value is just as important as loving their images.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS.

A photographer who has photographed weddings at Kingscote Barn will understand how the venue flows, where the best light can be found, how much time is needed for portraits and how to work seamlessly around the plans for your day. This knowledge allows you to relax, knowing your photographer can anticipate moments and make the most of the beautiful surroundings.

VIEW A FULL WEDDING GALLERY

When looking at photographers, I always recommend asking to see a full wedding gallery at Kingscote Barn, rather than only a selection of favourite images on Instagram. A wedding gallery should tell the complete story of the day – from morning preparations and the ceremony through to speeches, dancing and the moments in between. Look for a gallery that feels consistent, with a style and approach that you love from beginning to end.

CHAT TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Your photographer will be by your side for most of your wedding day, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with them as a person, not just their photography. A call before booking is a great way to get a feel for their personality, how they work and whether their approach feels right for you. The best photographs come when you feel relaxed and trust the person behind the camera.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kingscote Barn Weddings

Yes, I have photographed MANY beautiful weddings at Kingscote Barn and love working at this Cotswold venue. Knowing the venue means I understand how the day flows, where the best light can be found and the locations that work beautifully for natural, relaxed photographs.

Kingscote Barn has so many beautiful options for photographs. The light does dictate the best location for photographs, which means that every wedding will present different location opportunities due to the weather, time of day, time of year, etc.

I keep couple portraits relaxed and natural, usually taking around 20 minutes during the day, with the option to spend a little longer together at golden hour if the light is looking beautiful. The aim is never to take you away from your guests for a long time, but to give you a chance to enjoy a few moments together, and still give you flattering beautiful portraits.

Yes. Family photographs are an important part of many weddings. I recommend keeping the list to around 8–10 groups so they’re quick, organised and don’t take you away from your guests for too long.

Yes. The outdoor ceremony space at Kingscote Barn is a stunning option, with views across the Gloucestershire countryside. As with any outdoor ceremony, the weather and lighting conditions will influence the final photographs, but the setting provides a beautiful backdrop when conditions allow.

No. Couples are free to choose the photographer who feels right for them. While venue recommendations can be helpful, the most important thing is finding someone whose photography style, approach and personality match what you are looking for.

My approach combines documentary wedding photography with beautiful, natural portraits. I focus on capturing the moments that happen naturally throughout the day, while also creating gorgeous portraits that you will love looking back on. The result is a gallery that tells the full story of your wedding while still including portraits you will want to frame.

Some of my favourite images have been taken in the rain. A walk together with a couple of umbrellas can create beautifully atmospheric, romantic photographs that feel completely different to those taken on a sunny day.
Having photographed more than 300 weddings, I can honestly say that I’ve never seen the rain dampen the spirits of a wedding. Couples still laugh, guests still celebrate and the day still feels just as special. Kingscote Barn also has beautiful indoor spaces, so whatever the weather brings, there are always lovely opportunities to create natural, memorable photographs.

Not at all. 99% of my couples tell me they feel awkward about having their photographs taken before their wedding day. I believe that photos should reflect personalities, and the process of creating beautiful photographs should be a fun one. I stay away from ‘awkward static’ poses and I encourage you to move and interact with each other. A lot of my photographs that you see on my web site, couples are actually walking and just engaging with each other. In fact, some of my favourite photos, couples are not even looking at the camera. Most couples are surprised by how easy and enjoyable it feels, and a few hours into the day they’ve forgotten the camera is even there.

Now. Today. Yesterday! Ha ha. Experienced sought after wedding photographers book up 12-24 months in advance, so once you have booked your venue , booking your photographer is the next priority.
